Sleepy Hollow

Most of you know I have a soft spot in my heart for that ol' Hessian, named the "commander-in-chief of all the powers of the air." I still religiously watch Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow every Halloween season. (Oh, who am I kidding? I watch it all year!)

I particularly love the above scene because it illustrates how very, very, useless muzzle-loaders were in a desperate, imminent, emergency. The Horseman appears to threaten Katrina's man, Brom Bones, who is overly gifted in bravery, though not in brains, and Brom, seeing the Horseman stalking forward, kneels down to load his rifle...

If you've never had the opportunity to read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in its original form, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of this delightful short story with its original watercolors. It tells a much different story than Burton's adaptation, but is no less entertaining for it.

October 2017 Haunted Shenanigans Tour?

I've been chatting with Mr. ShellHawk about next year's October activities. I've wanted to do an "East Coast Halloween Tour" for awhile, since there are so many events, people and haunts I'd like to visit.

I'd like to start in Sleepy Hollow, New York, for the Great Jack-o'-lantern Blaze and various other events. I love historical tours, so of course, that would have to be on the list. The performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a no-brainer, too!

Maybe after that, we'd catch a plane to Nantucket and take the ferry to visit The Village Mire and Chris Baker. Have a couple of beahs in the yahd while he shows off his props.

After that, a quick trip up to see Haunted Overload. I've wanted to see this forever! It's always rated one of the top five haunted attractions in the nation.

On to Philadelphia, for the Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride and a tour of the city. Maybe Johnny Thunder will have some time to get together between scaring folks at the Bates!

There could be other things, but I think that's a good place to start!

Getting in the Mood For Hallowe'en

As I was doing some research for my Charmed Pot segment for the upcoming episode of Hauntcast, I popped in one of my favorite Halloween movies, Sleepy Hollow. I hadn't seen it for a bit, so it was fun to watch it, even with one eye on my computer as I was compiling some notes.

Because I'm a bit of a movie geek, I had to watch the "Making of" featurette, as I couldn't remember having done so, before. Click on the pic to watch, and hit, "Play All."

I hope it inspires you in your prop building, as much as it inspires me!

Found a neat little tutorial on scarecrow-making here, based on that neat little guy from Sleepy Hollow.You know, I'd make him, but I think Stewie might eat him. Those vine-y fingers of his are hard to break once they're wrapped around you!
