The Quintessential Witch

We love her, we hate her. She scares the crap out of us, and has since we were little children.

Above all, we envy her for her flying monkeys. We always wanted them for our very own.
Who would have believed that in 1939, a film character would so invade the American psyche? Margaret Hamilton, I think, defined the look of the witch for all time: Black dress, green skin, evil cackle and pointed hat screams "witch" to us to this day.
She was one badass witch. Christine over at Fascination With Fear wrote a pretty spanky post about her, so I won't make the attempt.

I do want my own flying monkeys, though.

  1. I fully agree. Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch is what we base our ideas of witches off of! I wrote a humorous short story from her perspective linked here if you get a moment to check it out! http://thesexyarmpit.blogspot.com/2009/10/off-my-chest-entry-from-journal-of.html

  3. The flying monkeys always scared me so much more than the witch.

And completely off on a tangent, the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang perhaps gave me the most nightmares. But next year he is my inspiration for the grave digger prop I'll be building for my yard display.

  4. I loved Margaret! No one could have done justice to the roll but her!

I would have named my flying monkey Bob.
